Meet us
Hey there, I’m Naomi Johnson, the farm lady behind these wonderful pigs!
My story starts in 2013 with a little pig named Fern. She came to live with us after a friend, who had Berkshire pigs, had her as an orphan and didn’t have time to take care of her. She asked if I wanted to take her and I did! (I have a weakness for baby farm animals…) She lived in a cat carrier and I fed her lamb milk replacer out of a bottle.
She was quite the little pig! She followed us around the yard and we even took her to visit some nursing home friends and also to pick apples at a friend’s house.
And she always loved a good scratch.
I fell in love with pigs. As a matter of fact, when the friend had some feeder size pigs she was looking to sell, I bought 5 more!
We also had 2 more children born in the 3 years after this, so I didn’t have the time to get more pigs. We were also growing our sheep herd and learning about management intensive grazing on our 20 acres, so life took that direction.
But I always wanted to keep pigs again.
Finally, in November 2019, the time had come. I brought 12 pigs to come and live in our barn again.
So where is life headed now? Well, we have had sheep since 2010 and although they are lovely creatures, we will never try to sell them locally.
(My sister and brother-in-law already sell 100% grassfed sheep right down the road.)
It has always made me sad to sell our sheep to a place where I don’t know where they go. I never know…do the little ewes become mother sheep…who buys these to make into a special Christmas dinner…do they like the flavor of homegrown, grass fed lamb meat…what recipes are favorites…etc.
I want get to meet the folks who buy our meat and talk to them and learn about how their lives have changed for the better because of meat I had a part in creating.
I also have a passion for raising animals in a way that makes them content for the time they are here with us. Happy animals are fun to be around and the taste in the meat is top-notch. Fresh air and sunshine give flavor nothing else can quite match.
So what do you think? Ready to come join us for this adventure filled with smoked bacon, Christmas hams and melt-in-your-mouth pork chops?
